About Relay Publishing
Relay Publishing is a multi-genre fiction publishing company running since 2013. We have a catalogue of over 875 books in both English, German and French, with our focus being on romance, young adult fantasy, science fiction, thrillers and post-apocalyptic.
After seven years working with publishing freelancers, we like to think we know what makes a creative, fun, and collaborative online environment. What We Do
We are a book publishing and packaging company. We develop great story ideas and collaborate with talented writers and editors to bring them to life. Story ideas and concepts are created by our in-house team, which are then fleshed out into detailed character profiles and outlines. The outlines are then given to our manuscript team – comprised of a ghostwriter and editor. The focus throughout is on exceptional storytelling, and the writer works closely with an editor to ensure the reader will be blown away by both the story and the prose. Depending on word count, the process from concept creation through to finished novel can range from four to twelve months.
Then the book enters the marketing phase where the cover and blurb are optimized to sell, and various advertisements are set up to promote the book. Every book is made with the target of hitting the bestseller list.
We want to work with people who are creative, passionate, and conscientious on an ongoing basis. As a virtual office, communication is key, we like to work with individuals who can meet deadlines and communicate clearly and efficiently to keep project coordinators up to date with your progress.
Our ideal candidate will work from the Relay Publishing outline and character profiles to produce well-constructed and effective blurbs from across our range of non-romance genres including Vigilante Justice, YA Fantasy, Post Apocalyptic, Legal Thrillers, Psychological Thrillers and YA Dystopian/ Scifi. Our blurbs are typically 200-250 words and should give a reader a taste of the conflict and characters, encouraging them to want more. The process will require a solid relationship with a story editor and should make you feel supported by a team as you create enticing and intriguing paragraphs.
Necessary Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience as a fiction writer
- Prior experience in fiction novel blurb writing
- Ability to construct a short, dynamic set of words without divulging a story or giving plot details
- Understanding of the role of the blurb in providing a hook, not a review
- Ability to select which details to include and which to filter out to retain the shape and feel of the novel
- Excellent communication and analytical skills
- Time management and prioritization
- Technologically savvy in order to work with our project management software and Word!
Prior experience in writing similar blurbs is required — viable candidates will understand that a good blurb is essential to readers moving from browsing to buying; from perusing to purchasing. You have the ability to capture a story’s essence from an outline and understand the tropes, language and style of the genre.
You enjoy a challenge and using your analytical skills to construct an appealing hook for readers that invites them to come on a journey. You have an eye for detail and ensure that your work is of a high standard at all times. You are a person who enjoys the brainstorming process and high level collaborative creation. You live and breathe the genres that you work it. You are passionate about your writing and work well with deadlines.
