Relay Publishing is looking for a creative, organized, and deadline-driven Romance Manuscript Fixer, who will review manuscripts, identify any issues, and then revise manuscripts to fix any problems.

Job Outline

Our ideal candidate will review manuscripts from a story level—digging into character set up, arcs, plot, structure, romance progression, pacing and ensuring it all falls within genre expectations for a romance novel. You will be expected to not only identify problems but also dig into the manuscript to “fix” it yourself, with a view to both big picture and line-level corrections so this is primarily a writing role.

When a story needs punching up (e.g. characters feel flat, dialogue needs tightening, romance lacking etc.) or there’s a plot hole or character issue we need correcting (e.g. hero is too alpha/domineering and needs pulling back, or a grand gesture just isn’t that grand). If the writer isn’t available or capable of fixing the manuscript, we like to bring in an experienced writer/editor to tackle the issues.

Necessary Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience within the romance genre. You should be familiar with the bestsellers and what readers expect from this genre.
  • A love for working collaboratively with writers and other editors.
  • Solid editing experience, with a passion for characters, plot, structure and romance. Story geeks are preferable!
  • Comfortable with intimate scenes.
  • Being able to mimic another writer’s voice
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Time management and prioritization
  • Technologically savvy

About You

A deep knowledge of the genre is required—as a writer, editor and reader,

You’re a talented and experienced editor or writer, with the ability to help create relatable and engrossing characters who instantly engage a romance reader, as well as an intriguing external plot line.

Your editing and writing style is warm, character-focused and driven by experience. You’re able to juggle both the external plot and the romance plot simultaneously, keeping tension high throughout.

You enjoy a challenge and working collaboratively with other talented creatives to build something magical: a story. You are a person who loves both the writing and the editing process and high level collaborative creation. You can say: “I’ve never missed a deadline.” Finally, you are passionate about your craft, storytelling and love working within a supportive team.

We want to work with editors who are creative, passionate, and conscientious on an ongoing basis. As a virtual office, communication is key—we like to work with individuals who can meet deadlines and communicate clearly and efficiently to keep project coordinators up to date with your progress.

What’s in it for You?

An amazing freelance, online, remote working environment with a real collaborative virtual office that fosters teamwork, development and open communication. We are passionate about creating an online workplace that really works! We use an online project management software that helps us keep an open, collaborative approach to all our projects.  Just because we work remote, doesn’t mean we have to be remote! We want to nurture our team and work with a consistent group of professionals to be part of the company as it continues to grow. We use an online project management system to run our projects which integrate seamlessly with your emails.

We thoroughly believe in long-term collaborative relationships and that is reflected in our approach to all our projects. We offer competitive rates, clear briefs & expectations, and friendly and fun communication throughout. Flexibility is one of our core work principles: as long as the work gets done, you can do it whenever it suits you. Unlike a traditional office we don’t require you to be at your desk 9-5—you pick your own schedule. If you’re serious about writing or editing for a living, we’d love to hear from you.

We are always open to ideas. We like to have brainstorming sessions and offer incentives for participation. Whether that’s a new book or business venture, a change to processes and workflow. No matter what your role, you are part of the team and your voice counts.

We have grown dramatically over the last couple years and we plan on growing more, come along for the ride!

When applying for this role …

The application form linked below will prompt you to submit a sample for review. For this role, ideally this will be:

  • a sample of a fixed manuscript that you have worked on (showing tracked changes of the fixes) to demonstrate your experience and skill in this role
  • a manuscript that you have heavily edited (substantive editing) noting that this would need to all be your work and no other editor input

Please be clear in the sample description what it is that has been submitted and whether the original manuscript was your own or a third party’s work that has been revised/ edited.

If both the above options are not available to you, then we will accept a writing sample in the romance genre (specifically in a subgenre that Relay publishes) that will give us an idea of your writing style and skills in this area. Please be aware that this role is not a straight manuscript writing role but more a revisions/ editing role for a writer.
