Relay Publishing is looking for a creative, organized, and deadline-driven Developmental & Line Editor, who will provide the feedback and guidance for an engaging Serial Killer Detective novel that will keep readers on the edge of their seats! We are looking for an experienced editor who wants to earn a competitive, reliable income in a fun online working environment using their editing skills.

About Relay Publishing

Relay Publishing is a multi-genre fiction publishing company running since 2013. We have a catalogue of over 875 books in both English, German and French, with our focus being on romance, young adult fantasy, science fiction, thrillers and post-apocalyptic.

After seven years working with publishing freelancers, we like to think we know what makes a creative, fun, and collaborative online environment. If you check out Relay’s Testimonials you’ll see we have a reputation for clear instructions, paying fairly and on time, and helping writers develop their craft.

We have a small team of people running the company, handling the coordination of projects, marketing, finance, human resources and administration. We also work with over a hundred creatives to bring our books to life. If you love stories, you’ll be among great company!

What We Do

We are a book publishing and packaging company. We develop great story ideas and collaborate with talented writers and editors to bring them to life. Story ideas and concepts are created by our in-house team, which are then fleshed out into detailed character profiles and outlines. The outlines are then given to our manuscript team – comprised of a ghostwriter and editor. The focus throughout is on exceptional storytelling, and the writer works closely with an editor to ensure the reader will be blown away by both the story and the prose. Depending on word count, the process from concept creation through to finished novel can range from four to twelve months.

Then the book enters the marketing phase where the cover and blurb are optimized to sell, and various advertisements are set up to promote the book. Every book is made with the target of hitting the bestseller list.

Job Outline

We want to work with people who are creative, passionate, and conscientious on an ongoing basis. As a virtual office, communication is key, we like to work with individuals who can meet deadlines and communicate clearly and efficiently to keep project coordinators up to date with your progress.

Our ideal candidate for this role will review both outlines and manuscripts from a story level—digging into character set up, arcs, plot, structure, pacing and ensuring it all falls within genre expectations. This process requires back and forth communication from our writers and editor as well as input from our concept creator. You will be expected to edit the manuscript with a view to line edits, including story flow, language choice, pacing etc.—this is a key requirement, if you’re not able to juggle the two please do not apply.

Necessary Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience within the Serial Killer Detective genre. You should be familiar with authors such as Karin Slaughter, Rachel Abbott, Jeff Carson, and Stieg Larrson.
  • Collaborating with writers to build a comprehensive manuscript to form a complex suspenseful story. Willing to offer suggestions and help problem solve where necessary.
  • Particularly looking for those with experience with police procedurals and suspense thriller editing.
  • Solid editing experience, with a passion for plot, structure and pacing. Story geeks wanted!
  • Ability to evaluate characters and story arcs to build drama for our readers.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Time management and prioritization.
  • Technologically savvy in order to work with our project management software and Word!

About You

A deep knowledge of the genre is required—viable candidates should already have edited and read widely in the Serial Killer Detective category. You have the ability to work with switching POV’s, and dark, disturbing topics, such as murder, child abduction, sexual abuse and violence.  You enjoy complicated, broken characters, and paced, suspenseful, and cleverly constructed novels.  Strong female characters are a big draw of this genre, so you should be a fan of these types of stories, but also understand the protagonist can’t be so perfect the reader is unable to relate to them.

Particularly looking for those with experience working with exciting police procedural storylines and juggling all the details that go into them to provide an immersive story: the pathology, victimology, analysing evidence, profiling the killer.  Key themes: female empowerment, overcoming misogyny & male dominated environments, overcoming past trauma and abuse. You need to have a high degree of familiarity with the genre, know how to plot and structure a story, and have a good understanding for what readers in this genre want. You will enjoy a challenge and using your problem-solving skills to help define what is next in the story. You are a person who enjoys the brainstorming process and high-level collaborative creation.
