Relay Publishing is looking for a creative, organized, and deadline-driven Developmental & Line Editor, who will provide the feedback and guidance to an engaging Sports Romance novel that keeps an audience coming back for more!
Our ideal candidate will review manuscripts from a story level—digging into character set up, arcs, plot,
structure, romance progression, pacing and ensuring it all falls within genre expectations for a cowboy romance. This process requires back and forth communication between yourself and our writers. You will also be expected to edit the manuscript with a view to line edits, including story flow, language choice, showing vs. telling etc. Doing both developmental and line edits in a pass is a key requirement for this role.
Necessary Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience within the romance genre and specific experience and knowledge in the Sports romance sub-genre. You should be familiar with Jaci Burton, Helena Hunting, Samantha Whiskey, Isla Madden-Mills, June Winters and Brenda Rothert.
- A love for working collaboratively with writers and other editors.
- Particularly looking for those with experience editing storylines in the intense professional sports world, with strong-willed, unflappable heroines who challenge the athletic, wealthy, and alpha heroes.
- Solid outline editing experience, with a passion for characters, plot, structure and romance. Story geeks are preferable!
- Excellent communication and analytical skills.
- Time management and prioritization.
- Technologically savvy in order to work with our project management software and Word!
A deep knowledge of the genre is required—viable candidates should already have edited widely in the Sports romance genres and be familiar with the bestsellers (Jaci Burton, Helena Hunting, Samantha Whiskey, Isla Madden-Mills, June Winters and Brenda Rothert). You’re a talented and experienced editor, with the ability to help a writer to create relatable and engrossing characters who instantly engage a romance reader, as well as an intriguing external plot line.
Your editing style is warm, character-focused and driven by experience. You’re able to juggle both the external plot and the romance plot simultaneously, keeping tension high throughout. A tight playoff game or locker room scene is as easy to edit as a love scene. The books you’ve edited previously leave readers believing in the power of love and emotionally satisfied by your characters overcoming all obstacles.
We want to work with editors who are creative, passionate, and conscientious on an ongoing basis. As a virtual office, communication is key—we like to work with individuals who can meet deadlines and communicate clearly and efficiently to keep project coordinators up to date with your progress.
You enjoy a challenge and working collaboratively with other talented creatives to build something magical: a story. You are a person who loves the editing process and high-level collaborative creation. You can say: “I’ve never missed a deadline.” Finally, you are passionate about your craft, storytelling and love working within a supportive team.
