Relay Publishing is looking for a creative, organised and deadline-driven Outline Editor to help oversee and shape the outlines for our exciting Military SciFi series! We are looking for an experienced editor who wants to earn a competitive, reliable income in a fun online working environment using their editing skills.

About Relay Publishing

Relay Publishing was founded in April 2013, and since then has developed a catalogue of over 750 books across several genres in both English, German and French. Our focus is on young adult fantasy, science fiction and romance, but we have recently expanded into the post-apocalyptic, cozy mystery, and psychological thriller genres.

At our core, we’re a book packaging company—our process starts with fresh concepts and outlines created by our in-house team. From there our amazing writers are commissioned to flesh it out into a fully-fledged book, while working alongside our award-winning editors, to create stories that readers simply can’t put down!

After several years working with publishing freelancers, we like to think we know what makes a fun, creative, and collaborative environment to work in. If you check out Relay’s Testimonials you’ll see we have a reputation for clear instructions, paying fairly and on time, and helping writers develop their craft. If you love stories, you’ll be among great company!

Book Packaging You Say?

That’s right, we’re a book publishing / packaging company. That means we handle the book publishing process from beginning to end. We take great story ideas and collaborate with talented writers to bring them to life. These story ideas and concepts are created by our in-house team, which are then fleshed out into detailed character profiles and outlines (10-15 pages).

We then work closely with one of our writers to bring these outlines to life. The focus throughout is on quality, and the writer works closely with an editor to ensure the reader will be blown away by both the story and the prose. Depending on the word count, the process from idea creation to finished product is 2-4 months.

Then the book enters the marketing phase where the cover and blurb are optimized to sell, and various advertisements are set up to promote the book. Every book is made with the target of hitting the bestseller list.

Job Outline

Our ideal candidate will work within the Relay Publishing’s outline template and will see the story develop step by step, from the very kernel of an idea to a detailed chapter-by-chapter outline. They will edit from a ‘big picture’ perspective, considering and strengthening story elements including conflict, pacing, character development, structure, story logic etc. This process requires extensive back and forth communication between writer and editor. You will be working from a Project Overview which details the concept for each book in the series as well as the tropes to be included, and other useful information to begin the project with.

You will be expected to edit outline stages as writers complete them to evaluate content, structure and identify potential problems. In addition, outline editors ensure our writers adhere to our style guide and writers’ guidelines. If a writer gets stuck, the outline editor helps them identify and work through obstacles.
